The most famous of the operas were H.M.S Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado. Sir Gilbert even wrote the Bab Ballads which was a compilation of light verses with his comical drawings. Oscar Wilde was known for his 1895 comic masterpiece titled The Importance of Being Earnest.

The works of popular poets of the Victorian era like Tennyson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning, Matthew Arnold and others were regarded as a bridge between the earlier and the modernist poetry of the next century. Alfred Tennyson was the favorite poet in the court of Queen Victoria.
Tennyson along with Elizabeth and Robert Browning wrote High Victorian poetry. The poems by Matthew Arnold and Gerard Manley Hopkins were between the exultation of nature of Romantic poetry and Georgian Poetry.
