Frederic Edwin Church was an American landscape painter who was born on 4 May 1826 in Hartford, Connecticut. He was also an essential figure in the Hudson River School of American landscape painters.

Louis Legrand Noble who was Frederic Edwin’s friend accompanied him and he also documented the voyage in his book, After Icebergs with a Painter. The dimensions of the painting are 64.5 × 112.5 in (163.8 × 285.8 cm). The Icebergs is exhibited at the Dallas Museum of Art and this museum acquires this painting in 1979.
